For three years, a group of artists known as the Gypsy Sage Artists exhibited together at shows in the Las Cruces area. In 2019, finding that others were seeking venues for their work, the group decided to invite local artists to exhibit in a cooperative gallery in the historic town of Mesilla, New Mexico. Agave Artists Gallery was born.
The artist-owned gallery provides visitors a chance to see a wide variety of outstanding work in a setting that highlights the work of reputed New Mexico artists. The cooperative houses the work of 18 painters, 3-D artists and jewelers in a gallery just off the Mesilla Plaza.
The gallery building is as interesting as the artwork itself. The adobe structure is part of the historic Josefina’s Old Gate:
“Josefina’s is aptly named for the dynamic and outgoing woman who lived here for nearly 35 years and established the Luminaria Tradition of Mesilla. Dating back to the early 1900’s this home has served as a place to gather, socialize, and celebrate. This tradition lives on as “Josefina’s” opens its gates to the community and visitors of Mesilla.”
