My story as an artist:

From a young age, I have always been drawn to the tactile quality that fiber art/craft has had to offer: wood, metal, fiber, and paper have often been materials that appear in my art. As an adult, I consider myself a Contemporary Fiber Artist.  My studio practice consists of wrapping, coiling, and stitching my materials into a continuous line contour of sculptural forms. I choose natural resources such as cotton, linen, wool, jute, and wood, which offer me a sensual, sensorial feel in my hands often becoming an extension of the gestures of my body. My development of transforming the medium is a meditative, ceremonial, and flowing state of motion. My love of quality craftsmanship and fine art makes a bold statement of whimsy and elegance.

Profession as an artist/creative

My profession is being a creative and imparting my knowledge and passion onto others. I have been an art educator for the last 40 years and a professional artist for the last 30 years. My dedication to education is equal to the passion I have in creating and exhibiting my art.  For the past four decades, I have been instructing art for Junior Kindergarten-12th grade, undergraduate, and adult education.  My commitment to teaching and the years of experience and exposure I bring through instruction, exhibiting, and networking in the art world complement the excellence of education: innovative techniques, critical and cultural theory, contemporary exhibitions, and historical inquiries. I have successfully inspired my students with training, encouragement, and confidence to create and show their work publicly. My accomplishments in teaching come from mentoring students in their gifts as an artist and watching them take these gifts and implement them in their lives.

Along my career, I have been very interactive with collaborative groups such as Art Meets Fashion, combining talents of San Diego’s top of the field artists, fashion designers, documenters, and educators inspiring and engaging the youth of San Diego to join along. This collaboration resulted in both my students and my team showing our creations at the San Diego International Airport in Spring of 2011; Healing Waters, an art for healing project with artist Gerrit Greve, (now deceased) and local high school students creating, exhibiting, and auctioning off work where all proceeds were donated to Arts: A Reason to Survive and Family Health Services; and Hats off to Life, working with a local retirement community of octogenarians creating hats to go along with their story of life and having a runway show for these elderly citizens to walk the runway.  I interact with galleries, curators, artists, and patrons of the arts, and involve my students in this interaction of the business and community of art. Since grad school, I have actively sought out and attained artist-in-residences as well as exhibiting my art both nationally and internationally. I am currently the art instructor and gallerist at a charter school in Las Cruces, NM. I am actively engaged in my new environment working with other artists through New Mexico’s Creative Industries.
